Today’s current, popular poetry
creates vivid images and strongly-worded phrases that hit readers like the
no-holds-barred stand-up comedians’ monologues.
But contrary to most reader’s
delighted discovery of this fresh, new writing, the term ‘Stand Up poetry’
has actually been around for over forty years, since Edward Field’s first
book of poetry, Stand Up, Friend, With Me won the Academy of
American Poets’ Lamont Poetry Prize in 1962.
It’s not your aunt’s style of poetry.
‘Stand Up poetry’ includes a playful enjoyment of the language, presented
informally and containing many references to cutting-edge mass culture,
particularly urban settings. Its words and phrases are neither obscure nor
tedious.
One of the newest poets to offer his
work to the public is Randy Stark, in his Simpatico Patio!
collection. Poem titles include “Deliver Us From The Housing Authority,”
“Concerto For Pierced Piano,” and “Putting Descartes Before The Whores,”
deftly coaxing literary browsers into continuing to read, long after the
usual attention span has passed.
About the Author
Stark, a Chicago native, has lived in
various locales across the country, including Albuquerque, Seattle, and an
architecturally-significant gas station in Venice, California. His fiction
and essays have been published in the United States and Canada. He
graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a degree
in cultural anthropology. His fiction and essays have appeared in literary
magazines in the United States and Canada. This is his first book of
poetry, which was displayed upon its publication at poet's house
in New York City during their Annual Open House.
